Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute (Born Free USA) is a national animal advocacy non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, contributions to which are tax-deductible. In December 2007, the Animal Protection Institute and Born Free USA merged to form a new organization combining the strength of API's successful 40-year history as a top-rated charity advocating for animals in the United States and Born Free USA's expertise in national and international wildlife advocacy issues.

Born Free USA's primary areas of focus in the United States are exotic pets, animals in entertainment, international wildlife trade and trapping/fur. Born Free USA uses powerful tools including legislation, public education, litigation, and grassroots networking in its programs to end animal cruelty and exploitation.

Born Free USA also provides "hands-on" care for animals at the API Primate Sanctuary, near San Antonio, Texas, where more than 400 primates, many of whom were rescued from abusive situations in laboratories, roadside zoos, and private possession, live in as natural an environment as possible with minimal human interference.
